Learning Objective: Students will participate in the creative process to make a fictitious movie poster from conception to final print. Students will research movie poster design, draw up multiple sketches, and research and practice new Photoshop techniques. The end result of the poster will show their proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and their understanding of new graphic design concepts and visual hierarchy.
You will make TWO movie posters.
You can either do two posters about the same movie, or two totally difference concepts.
Assignment Choice #1: Create a convincing movie poster for a fake movie that doesn't exist. You get to make it up!
Assignment Choice #2: Create a convincing movie poster based off of an existing movie, but change it into a "pun" or play on words. For example, instead of "Planet of the Apes" it would be "Planet of the Snapes" from Harry Potter.
Assignment Choice #3: Create a convincing movie poster for a movie that already exists. If doing this option you need to make sure you are creating new and original imagery and not just copying what already exists.
Assignment Choice #4: Create a convincing movie poster for a movie adapted from a book.
Once you have chosen which assignment you want to do, then PICK A GENRE:

Once you have chosen which assignment you want to do, then PICK A GENRE:
- Action
- Adventure
- Comedy
- Romance/RomCom
- Drama
- Horror
- Musicals
- Science Fiction
- Westerns
Project Requirements:
- Dimensions of the Movie Poster is: 11 in x 17 in
- Resolution: 300 dpi
- You may use image sources from the internet to include into your movie poster that would otherwise be impossible to duplicate (for example, explosions, airplanes, forests, wild animals, etc.)
- Don't forget about the high quality image available on www.pexels.com or unsplash.com/ and www.unsplash.com
- ORIGINALITY - Since we’ve been doing some tutorials and you’ve been honing your skills, I do want to see clear evidence that you are learning to create your own effects rather than relying on simply copying and pasting. 75% or more of the poster design has to be of your own ORIGINAL creation. At this point all of your layers must skillfully blend seamlessly together.
- Text manipulation: Do something interesting and creative to the text. Be thoughtful in your typeface choices and make it look more than just words placed on a page. At least one aspect of the poster's type needs to be "designed" and manipulated in some way.
- All pictures must be of high-quality, high resolution images. If an image is pixelated because it is too small off the internet-- choose a different one.
- You will save your work as a .PSD file for yourself, but save a copy as a .JPG for google classroom. Make sure you do NOT merge or flatten the layers down in the final version.
- Visual Hierarchy of information and how it's designed.
- You must include at least 4 levels of visual hierarchy:
- REQUIRED;
- Title of movie
- Actors
- Release Date
- EXTRA THINGS YOU COULD INCLUDE;
- Tagline
- Awards received
- Rating of the movie (Choices include: G, PG, PG-13, R…. sorry, no “X” or NC-17 movies allowed)
- Logo of the production company, example: Paramount, Marvel, etc.
- Any other information you want to include
- REQUIRED;
- You must include at least 4 levels of visual hierarchy:
- REQUIRED: MUST include fictitious credits at the bottom
Examples of movie posters from last year:
Work Flow:
- Visual Hierarchy google research: due November 7th and 8th (block day)
- 8 Sketches: due Friday, November 9th
- First movie poster critique: Friday, November 16th. Must have ONE poster designed so you can receive feedback.
- Second movie poster critique Friday, November 30th Must have second poster designed so you can receive feedback.
- Project due: Block day Wednesday December 6th or Thursday, December 7th
- You must make BOTH critique deadlines if you want to be able to use the 1-week grace period after the final project is due.
Learning objective: Students sketch their ideas as part of the creative process to help narrow ideas for the movie poster design project.
In your sketchbook, sketch 8 movie poster thumbnail sketches. Think about what kind of imagery you would be using and where your text would be placed, etc.
Milestone Deadline: Take a photo of your sketches and turn into Google classroom by Friday, November 9th.
